GUWAHATI: The body of a man from Assam was discovered in a train toilet on Sunday, prompting suspicions of foul play and triggering demands for a thorough investigation from his grieving family.

Identified as Biman Chutiya, the 45-year-old deceased was a mason who had been employed in a ply factory in Bangalore and was on his way back to his hometown, Khanikar village in Sivasagar district.

According to his family, Chutiya had mistakenly ended up in Delhi instead of reaching his intended destination of Guwahati on a Wednesday. However, a stranger had helped him board a Guwahati-bound train on Friday.

According to reports, Chutiya had managed to speak to his wife from Ghaziabad station around 11 pm on Friday. During the conversation, he even handed over the phone to an unknown person who assured Chutiya’s wife of his safety. However, the subsequent night his lifeless body was discovered in the train’s toilet at Malda station.

The railway police have asserted that Chutiya had taken his own life inside the train toilet but this information has been met with skepticism by his family. In their view, visible injury marks on his body raise suspicions of a potential homicide. Fuelled by grief and suspicion, they are now clamouring for a comprehensive investigation into the matter, seeking justice for their lost family member.

The family has also appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene, urging the retrieval of Chutiya’s body, which remains at Malda.

Earlier on March 26, the body of an Assam-based banker was recovered from a locked toilet inside a train in Karnataka. Identified as Ashok Roy Choudhury (33) from Silchar, he had gone went missing on March 25.

According to reports, Choudhury’s body was recovered from a locked toilet inside the Yeshvantpur-Shivamoga (Shimoga) Intercity Express. Reportedly, Choudhury’s wife, Anushka Roy Choudhury, who had reached Yeshwantpur station travelling from Silchar via Kolkata and was waiting for Ashok, had filed an FIR at the Yeshwantpur Railway Police. Preliminary investigations revealed the cause of Choudhury’s death as cardiac arrest.
