Dibrugarh: A man has been arrested in Assam’s Tinsukia district for allegedly creating and distributing morphed images and AI-generated pornographic videos of a woman on social media, police confirmed on Sunday.
According to Dibrugarh SSP (In-Charge) Sizal Agarwal, the arrest was made following a complaint lodged by the victim on Saturday.
She alleged that explicit and doctored content featuring her likeness had been circulated online with the intent to defame her.
The woman had recently been thrust into the public eye after a morphed photo, purportedly showing her alongside an adult film actor, went viral.
The misleading claims suggested she had entered the adult film industry in the United States.
“We traced the origin of the images and videos to an Instagram account mentioned in the complaint. Through digital forensics, we tracked the account’s registered phone number to the accused,” Agarwal said.
Police investigations revealed that the accused, a mechanical engineer by training and a former acquaintance of the victim, had used AI tools to generate and disseminate the obscene content.
“What began as a case of personal vendetta escalated when the accused started profiting from the material,” the SSP added.
Authorities discovered that the accused had monetised the content by linking it to a paid subscription service, earning approximately Rs. 10 lakh.

“The financial gains drove him to continue the exploitation,” Agarwal said.
During the arrest, police seized multiple electronic devices including mobile phones, a laptop, hard drives, and other digital evidence.
The case is expected to involve multiple agencies due to the nature and scale of the cybercrime.
Police have urged the public to remain cautious while accessing and sharing content online and to verify the authenticity of any material before forwarding it on social media platforms. Investigations are ongoing.
