Kokrajhar (Assam): Normal life came to a standstill in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Sunday following a shutdown called in protest against the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman, officials said.
Markets and business establishments remained closed, while public transport services were largely suspended during the bandh, which was called by the World Hindu Federation.
To prevent any escalation of the situation, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The incident occurred in the Patharghat area of the district on Saturday. Police said the accused, a resident of Dhubri district, has been arrested.
Additional security personnel were deployed at sensitive locations across Kokrajhar to maintain law and order.
The administration appealed to residents to remain calm and cautioned against the spread of rumours, warning that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in rumour-mongering.
People were urged to report any misleading information to the district control room.
District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty and Senior Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg convened a peace meeting with representatives of political parties, social organisations, student bodies and prominent citizens to ensure the situation does not deteriorate.

Chakravarty said the district administration was closely monitoring developments and had taken all necessary steps to maintain public peace and tranquillity.
He also announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the case and ensure justice through due legal process.
As part of preventive measures, the administration has begun identifying vulnerable areas for the installation of CCTV cameras and street lighting.
Emphasising unity and harmony, the district commissioner appealed to all sections of society to place faith in democratic institutions and work collectively for peace and development in Kokrajhar, which is home to diverse communities.
