Guwahati: In view of the prevailing extreme cold weather conditions, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has ordered the temporary closure of all government and provincialised schools in Guwahati for one week.

According to an official advisory issued to all heads of schools by the Inspector of Schools of Kamrup Metropolitan district, all schools will remain shut from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026. Classes will resume on January 7.

The decision follows a sharp drop in daytime temperatures in the state capital. The decision has been taken with the approval of the District Commissioner, Kamrup (Metropolitan).

School authorities have been instructed to inform students, parents, and staff about the closure and ensure that no academic or co-curricular activities are conducted during this period.

Heads of Schools have also been asked to make necessary arrangements for the smooth resumption of classes after reopening.

The Chief Minister’s Office said the closure was ordered in view of the ongoing cold wave and to ensure student safety.

Meanwhile, private schools have been advised to take their own decisions regarding closure, keeping the interests and well-being of students in mind.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Guwahati on Tuesday was 18.1 degrees Celsius, which was 6.4 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 15.1 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees above normal.
