Guwahati: Justice Ashutosh Kumar has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
His appointment was part of a government order issued on July 11, which included the elevation of five judges from various High Courts to the position of Chief Justice.
Previously, Justice Kumar served as the acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
According to a Press Communique issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the appointments were made by President Droupadi Murmu.
The chief justices of four High Courts have been transferred.
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, formerly acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, has been elevated to Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Justice Vibhu Bakhru, a judge of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi, a judge in the Patna High Court, will take charge as its new Chief Justice.
Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, a judge in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, has been designated as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
These changes aim to strengthen leadership and efficiency within the nation’s higher judiciary and align with the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, on May 26, 2025.
Besides, four Chief Justices have also been transferred to new High Courts.
Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, formerly Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, will now serve as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh has been transferred as Chief Justice from the Tripura High Court to the Telangana High Court.
Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, who was the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, will now take on this role in the Tripura High Court.
Justice K.R. Shriram, formerly Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, has been transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.

Meanwhile, Justice Lanusungkum Jamir, the acting CJ, has been transferred from Gauhati HC to Calcutta HC, and Justice Suman Shyam has been transferred from Gauhati HC to Bombay HC.
