GUWAHATI: Currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh Jail, Khalistan separatist leader Amritpal Singh is set to win the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat.

The radical, Waris Punjab De Chief is contesting as an independent candidate from the jail.

According to numbers revealed by the Election Commission of India (ECI), till the time of writing this report, Singh has amassed over 1 lakh votes over his competitors including Congress’ Kulbir Singh Zira.

The other contenders for the seat are BJP’s Manjit Singh Manna, AAP’s Laljit Singh Bhullar and Akali Dal’s Virsa Singh Valtoha.

Amritpal Singh, the pro-Khalistani leader, was recently embroiled in a controversy following the discovery of a communication network within Dibrugarh jail, allegedly masterminded by him.

Indian intelligence sources say he’s linked to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and may have helped arm a private militia called Anandpur Khalsa Fauj (AKF).

Arrested by the Punjab Police on April 23, 2023, under the NSA, Singh has remained in the high-security confines of Dibrugarh Central Jail since then.

Amritpal and nine other members of the separatist group were arrested under the NSA following an alleged intrusion into the Ajnala police station complex in Punjab, on February 23, 2023.

Currently, nine including Amritpal, are in Assam jail, awaiting legal proceedings.
