Assam: IIT Guwahati hosts foundation ceremony for Mehta Family Schools in Data Science & Health Sciences

Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati hosted the foundation ceremony for the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and Jyoti & Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology on its campus on Tuesday.

This landmark event represents a significant leap forward in advancing cutting-edge research, education, and innovation in India.

Rahul Mehta, Chief Executive Officer, Mehta Family Foundation, USA, laid the foundation stone of the schools in the esteemed presence of Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, and Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director, AIIMS Guwahati.

Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, presided over the event, joined by eminent dignitaries including Prof. Shankar Subramanian, and Prof. Rajesh Gupta, from the University of California, Santiago, and Prof. Ananth Grama Purdue University, USA.

Expressing his vision, Mr. Rahul Mehta, CEO, the Mehta Family Foundation, said, “This is a momentous occasion for IIT Guwahati and the Mehta Family Foundation. Our vision is to create intellectual talent that drives economic prosperity. These schools will train thousands of students who will lead India’s transformation, particularly in AI and its intersection with healthcare. This initiative is a critical step toward fostering innovation and securing India’s economic and social future.”

 The Jyoti & Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology is set to revolutionise healthcare by merging engineering, biomedical science, and design principles. It will focus on developing innovative, affordable healthcare solutions tailored to India’s specific needs.

Sharing his insights on the vision of Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director, AIIMS Guwahati, said, “This school will integrate medicine and engineering to develop cutting-edge technologies like bionics, nanotechnology, robotics, and bioinformatics. It will also explore personalised medicine and wearable devices, driving innovation to alleviate human suffering and improve healthcare outcomes. I am excited about this visionary collaboration between IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Guwahati, and the Mehta Family Foundation.”

 The Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence will address the growing demand for expertise in data-driven technologies.

By leveraging interdisciplinary approaches, the school aims to empower students with skills to solve complex problems and lead the global AI revolution.

Underscoring the importance of these initiatives, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “These schools represent IIT Guwahati’s commitment to addressing critical national challenges. Beyond tackling healthcare issues like lifestyle diseases, the schools will focus on creating novel medical technologies and devices, transitioning India from importing solutions to becoming a global innovator in healthcare and AI.”

 The establishment of the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Jyoti & Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology aligns closely with India’s national priorities, emphasising self-reliance and global leadership in technology and healthcare.

Through education, research, and collaboration, IIT Guwahati aims to nurture professionals who can address emerging challenges and drive transformative solutions.
