Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a female student of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) was found dead in her hostel room on Friday morning.
The 23-year-old student hailed from Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh.
The deceased, identified as Somia, was a second-year student pursuing electronics and electrical engineering.
According to police, the incident occurred around 10:30 am at Disang Hostel.
The family members of the deceased are expected to arrive in Guwahati on Saturday.
“We have received a call from IIT Guwahati that a female student was found hanging at Disang Hostel at around 10.30 am. We rushed to the spot and recovered the body. The body will be sent for postmortem tomorrow after the arrival of the family members,” said a senior police official.
In a statement, IIT Guwahati expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a female student at the campus. “The police are investigating the matter. The student’s immediate family has been informed and the Institute is providing them full support during this difficult time,” it stated.
