Guwahati: More than 7.69 lakh students are set to appear for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary (HS) Final Examinations, 2026, which begin this week across Assam, with the state government and the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) putting in place extensive security and monitoring measures to ensure smooth and malpractice-free conduct.
The HSLC Examination 2026 starts on Tuesday and will continue till February 27, being held at a record 1,046 examination centres — the highest number ever in the Board’s history.
A total of 4,38,565 candidates will appear, including 1,90,243 male and 2,48,322 female students.
The evaluation process for Class X papers will be conducted in 45 evaluation zones across the state.
The Higher Secondary Final Examination 2026 will be conducted from February 11 to March 16 at 821 centres, with 48 evaluation zones.
Altogether, 3,30,744 candidates will appear in the HS examinations across four streams — arts, science, commerce and vocational.
In the Arts stream, 2,47,865 candidates will take the exams, including 1,02,648 male, 1,45,216 female and one transgender candidate.
The Science stream has 61,568 candidates, comprising 34,801 male, 26,766 female and one transgender candidate.

Commerce will see 19,806 students appear, with 13,782 male and 6,024 female candidates, while the vocational stream includes 1,505 candidates — 887 male and 618 female students.
To maintain strict discipline and prevent malpractice, the authorities have activated state- and district-level monitoring committees to oversee every stage of the examination process.
Flying squads led by executive magistrates will conduct surprise inspections at examination centres, while district administrations have been authorised to impose prohibitory orders around centres to prevent unlawful gatherings and outside interference.
Officials said that with tight security arrangements, continuous administrative supervision and coordinated monitoring, the board examinations will be conducted in a fair, transparent and orderly manner across Assam.
