Guwahati: With a view to enhancing railway safety and operational efficiency, Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Manoj Yadava, inaugurated the newly built Escort Mobilisation Hall at Guwahati Railway Station on Saturday.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has also installed 135 CCTV cameras throughout the Guwahati railway station to enhance passenger security.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), and a host of senior railway officials and RPF personnel.

The Director General underscored the RPF’s commitment to deploying modern security systems and infrastructure to address the growing needs of Indian Railways and its passengers.

The Escort Mobilisation Hall, now fully operational, is envisioned as a centralised coordination hub that will significantly enhance the deployment and mobilisation of RPF escort personnel.

NFR public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that the Rs 1.3 crore camera system features artificial intelligence capabilities.

The installation includes facial recognition technology for real-time identification, movement tracking and enhanced suspicious activity detection.

“These cameras, which have been strategically installed in the nooks and corners of the railway station, including on each platform. It will be monitored and controlled from a centralised control room. The AI-powered system is designed to raise alerts if it detects any suspicious behaviour, such as someone loitering in a particular area for more than five seconds. By analyzing facial patterns, the system can identify individuals and flag unusual activity, allowing authorities to respond swiftly and take necessary action,” the PRO said.

Additionally, 20 panic buttons have been positioned near cameras across the station to assist distressed passengers.

Sharma said, “There are twenty panic buttons which are strategically installed across various platform locations. In case of an emergency, the person can press the button to alert the control room instantly. The system then transmits the individual’s image and location, enabling the control room staff to coordinate immediate assistance with on-ground security personnel.”

Furthermore, he pointed out that the cameras are equipped with an anti-tampering feature.

If obstruction or damage is attempted, the control room receives an immediate alert, and the system records the final image of the individual responsible, he added.
