Guwahati: The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on tax evasion, with recent raids on business establishments across the state leading to uncovering of tax suppression of around Rs 5.80 crore.
The state’s Finance (Taxation) department said the search and seizure operations were carried out in Barpeta Road, Jorhat, and Tinsukia.
The State GST department emphasized its commitment to safeguarding state revenue by detecting “unscrupulous dealers.” These operations, including potential arrests, aim to deter future illicit activities and serve as a clear message to all taxpayers about the consequences of engaging in malpractices.
In the search and seizure by officials of Barpeta Road Unit office of Commissionerate of State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) in the business premises M/s Apsara Beej Bhander on Thursday, evidence of physical stock differences with audited stocks was found.
On initial verification of the records, it was found that the taxpayer indulged in practice of sale suppression, which resulted in evasion of tax amounting to Rs 15 lakh approximately.
“Verification is going on and the actual amount of evasion will be established after final verification,” the statement regarding this raid said, adding that total suppression is estimated to be around Rs 3 crore taxable turnover.
The Tinsukia unit of the SGST Commissionerate also conducted an operation on Thursday at Jain Marketeers. This raid uncovered evidence of misclassification of goods and nil SGST cash payments. Preliminary checks indicate that the taxpayer was claiming ineligible Input Tax Credit (ITC), leading to an estimated tax evasion of around Rs 20 lakh. The total suppressed amount in this case is estimated to be Rs 80 lakh.
On June 11, the Assistant Commissioner of State Tax, Jorhat Unit of SGST Commissionerate, carried out a search and seizure operation at M/s Dolly Glass and Décor. Evidence of tax evasion was found across various records, including E-way Bills, Trading Accounts, sales registers, and purchase registers.
Initial verification revealed the taxpayer suppressed sales turnover, resulting in an estimated tax evasion of approximately Rs 2 crore.

During the interrogation of the proprietor of the firm, it transpired that he indulged in tax evasion through suppression of sales and purchases and total suppression is estimated to be around Rs 2 crore.
The Assam Finance (Taxation) department stated that these operations are a crucial step in ensuring tax compliance and protecting the state’s financial resources.
