Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a local holiday on November 1 within the jurisdiction of Kamrup (Metro) District on account of Diwali.

A notification issued by the General Administration Department on Monday stated, “The Governor of Assam is pleased to declare local holiday on 1st November within the jurisdiction of Kamrup (Metro) District on account of Diwali festival.”

All state government offices and educational institutions within the district will remain closed on November 1, it said.

Besides, all financial intuitions will also remain closed on account of the local holiday.

The Assam government has announced the early disbursement of salaries to its employees to facilitate their Diwali celebrations.

The state government has also announced a unique leave initiative called ‘Pitri Matri Vandana’ to encourage employees to dedicate time to their parents and in-laws. This program offers a special casual leave for state government employees from November 6 to November 10, 2024, aligning with the cultural values of honouring and caring for elderly family members.

This initiative allows employees to combine the special leave period with public holidays like Chhath Puja on November 7, and the scheduled second Saturday and Sunday, creating an extended five-day break.

The idea behind the special leave it is to make employees dedicate their time to parents or parents-in-law and also to extend love, respect, and companionship to elders.

Notably, this leave is not intended for personal activities unrelated to family care, ensuring its use aligns with the program’s core values.

Pitri Matri Vandana also enables employees in essential services to avail of the leave in a phased manner, thereby ensuring uninterrupted services across the state. However, this unique leave does not apply to employees without living parents or in-laws.
