Guwahati: In a daring pre-dawn escape, four inmates broke out of Sadiya District Jail in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday, prompting authorities to launch a large-scale manhunt. Officials described the incident as a significant security breach at the high-security facility, raising concerns over existing safeguards.
According to senior officials, the prisoners executed their plan early in the morning by scaling the prison’s high perimeter walls. They reportedly made a makeshift rope by tying together multiple pieces of cloth, which enabled them to climb over the wall and disappear into the surrounding area.
The escapees have been identified as Nabin Buragohain, Amlanjyoti Chetia, Sasadhar Deori, and Huntu Sonowal.
Sadiya Senior Superintendent of Police Jagadish Das confirmed the incident, saying the jailer alerted him during the morning rounds. “The jailer informed me that four prisoners had managed to flee. An investigation into the circumstances of the breach has been launched, and a massive search operation is currently underway,” Das said. He added that all nearby police stations have been alerted to track and apprehend the escapees.
Authorities have also cordoned off multiple exit points across Tinsukia to prevent the fugitives from crossing into other districts or states. While police are pursuing specific leads, no arrests have been made so far. An internal inquiry is expected to determine whether negligence on the part of the jail staff contributed to the escape.

The incident occurred in the Chapakhowa area, officials said, and has highlighted serious lapses in security at the fortified facility.
Police have urged locals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the area while the search continues.
