Guwahati: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday will lay the foundation stone for Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University at Gohpur in Assam — India’s first Technology-based Vocational Education and Training University.
The Rs 415 crore project will shape a skilled, future-ready generation through advanced fields like AI, Cybersecurity, Drone Tech, and Quantum Computing, the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
The finance minister will grace the event as the chief guest in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, and Gohpur legislator Utpal Borah.
Sitharaman, who is on a two-day tour to the state, visited the upcoming facility of Tata Electronics’ Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT), situated at Jagiroad in Assam’s Morigaon district.
Tata Group’s upcoming Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor plant will put Assam in the driver’s seat of the engine for developed India, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.
The Union Finance Minister’s Office said that the semiconductor project, which is set to become one of the country’s premier manufacturing sites, aligns with the nation’s broader goal of establishing a self-sufficient semiconductor ecosystem.
“The Morigaon semiconductor facility is part of a wider network of government-backed projects aimed at bolstering India’s semiconductor production capabilities,” it added.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the NDA government has been promoting the growth of semiconductor and chip manufacturing within the country, paving the way for technological advancement and economic resilience, the finance minister’s office said.
Sitharaman participated in ‘Enterprise Assam – Viksit Bharat 2047’, a dialogue with students, startups and entrepreneurs of the state at Jagiroad.
The union minister also inaugurated the Brahmaputra Riverfront – Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan in Guwahati.
She also inspected the ongoing construction of the Unity Mall (Ekta Mall) and Integrated Directorate Buildings at Betkuchi in Guwahati. The project is expected to boost Assam’s administrative efficiency and promote local products under the One District One Product initiative.
