GUWAHATI: The floodwaters of Assam refuse to relent, casting a shadow of despair over more than 600,000 people spread across ten districts.
A total of 6,01,642 individuals in Hailakandi, Hojai, Morigaon, Karimganj, Nagaon, Cachar, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong West, and Dima Hasao districts are struggling amidst the floodwaters.
As of on Sunday, the death toll from floods and storms stands at 15.
Nagaon is the worst-hit district, with a staggering 279,000 people affected, followed by Hojai with 126,813 affected residents, and Cachar with 112,265 people impacted.
The rising waters have forced more than 40,000 displaced residents to seek refuge in 187 relief camps set up across various districts.
Continuous heavy rainfall has led to swollen rivers, including the Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara, which are all flowing above the danger level, prompting evacuations.

Rescue and relief operations are in full swing, coordinated by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administrations, and community volunteers.
Assam Police, in a post on social media, confirmed that 966 people and 89 animals had been rescued as of Saturday.
“Their exemplary dedication is ensuring the safety and well-being of affected citizens,” posted Hari Singh, director of Fire and Emergency Services Assam on a micro-blogging website.
Transportation remains severely disrupted. Road and rail connections have been particularly hit, with significant damage reported between New Haflong’s Chandranathpur section and waterlogging at Silchar station in the Lumding division.
Consequently, at least ten trains scheduled from Saturday to Monday have been cancelled, according to a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson.
As the state battles the flood crisis, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, striving to provide aid and ensure the safety of all affected communities.
