Guwahati: Five people are feared missing after they were swept away while swimming in the Brahmaputra in Guwahati on Wednesday, officials said.
The incident occurred at Bhakti Kutir in Kharghuli, where eight individuals had entered the river.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three of them managed to swim back to safety and were taken to hospital, while the remaining five have not been traced.
Teams of the NDRF, SDRF and local authorities have launched a coordinated search along the river.

“Operations are ongoing, and the area has been cordoned off to facilitate rescue efforts,” an ASDMA official said, adding that the identities of the missing persons are yet to be confirmed.
A senior NDRF official noted that strong undercurrents in the area are complicating the search.
“The surface appears calm, but the currents below are extremely strong. It is unlikely the missing individuals remain near the spot. We are extending the search downstream,” the official said.
No bodies have been recovered so far.
