GUWAHATI: In a remarkable feat, Assam Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and Assam’s Rural and Urban Livelihood Missions entered the India Book of Records by organising a pledge-taking event involving 40 lakh women in Assam.
At a meeting CEO’s office in Dispur on Wednesday, over 40 lakh women members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across the state took a pledge to uphold the democratic traditions of the country and the dignity of free, fair and peaceful 18th Lok Sabha polls, on a single day.
At the CEO’s office, adjudicator from the India Book of Records, Narvijay Yadav, verified the proceedings and announced the successful completion of the pledge-taking event, thereby setting a new record.
Assam CEO Anurag Goel received the certificate of recognition from Yadav.
Also present at the do were Mission Director Masanda Pertin of Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission, Joint CEO Pankaj Chakravarty, and Emily Baruah.
The initiative aimed to improve voter participation in Assam by effectively implementing the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, focusing on both quantity and quality.
Voting for the 14 Lok Sabha seats of Assam will be conducted in three phases. The first phase, scheduled for April 19, will cover seats like autonomous district, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, and Lakhimpur.
Following this, the second phase on April 26 will encompass Karimganj, Silchar, Mangaldoi, Nagaon, and Kaliabor. Finally, the third phase on May 7 will include Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, and Guwahati.
