Guwahati: Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the Director General of Assam Police, was officially released from state services on Monday after a two-year tenure.

He is set to assume the position of Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), as per an official notification.

A 1991-batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Singh has served as the DGP of Assam since February 1, 2023.

The notification, issued by Biswajit Pegu, Home and Political Commissioner & Secretary, stated that Singh will be relieved from his current role upon the completion of handing over charges.

Singh’s new role as CRPF DG is expected to continue until his retirement in November 2027, or until further instructions are issued, the order noted.

However, the notification did not specify when Singh will formally transfer responsibilities to Special DGP Harmeet Singh, who has been entrusted with the additional charge of overseeing the DGP’s duties.

Singh had previously returned from central deputation in December 2019, during the height of the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in Assam.

Before returning to the state, he served as the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) IGP in New Delhi.

He also has experience with the Special Protection Group (SPG).

The Assam government order further indicated that Special DGP Harmeet Singh, who is currently overseeing multiple critical responsibilities, including Director General of Civil Defence, Commandant General of Home Guards, and Director of Fire and Emergency Services, will temporarily handle the DGP duties until a permanent successor is appointed.
