Guwahati: Assam Director General of Police (DGP), G P Singh has been appointed as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a Personnel Ministry order said.
Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was appointed days after the Ministry of Home Affairs proposed his name.
As per an official order dated January 18, the decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The appointment will be effective from the date of his assumption of charge, with a tenure lasting until November 30, 2027, or until further orders.
Singh was appointed as DGP of Assam on January 31, 2023. He will take over as DG of the Central Reserve Police Force from Special DG of the CRPF, Vitul Kumar, who is currently officiating as DG-CRPF.
G P Singh boasts a distinguished career with extensive experience across diverse roles within the police force. He has held various key positions, including critical assignments in the Northeast and at the national level.
The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force in India, playing a vital role in maintaining internal security and combating insurgencies.
Singh’s appointment is considered a strategic decision, leveraging his vast experience in counter-insurgency operations and law enforcement within Assam and other regions of the Northeast.
In 2013, he was deputed to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), where he held the position of Inspector General.
Although his term was to conclude in 2020, he was unexpectedly summoned to Assam in December 2019 to assume the role of ADGP (Law & Order) during the widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
