GUWAHATI: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh is in Dibrugarh to assess the aftermath of a significant security breach at the Dibrugarh Central Jail, on Tuesday.
The DGP’s visit follows the revelation by Assam Police of a major communication network operating within the jail, allegedly masterminded by pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh.
In response to escalating concerns, DGP Singh has revealed the implementation of enhanced surveillance measures within the jail premises.
Reports from local media outlets suggest that subsequent searches have uncovered a cache of unauthorised devices, ranging from smartphones to spy-cam pens, sounding alarm bells about the extent of illicit activities within the prison walls.

Investigations are currently underway to outline the full scope of the network and discern its sources of support, with stringent measures being enacted to envisage any recurrence of such breaches.
Earlier, on February 17, reports emerged of a major communication network purportedly orchestrated by Amritpal, the founder of Waris Punjab De, who was apprehended in March 2023.
Amritpal stands accused of orchestrating unauthorised activities and maintaining ties with external elements.
Reports from Indian intelligence sources, published in local news outlets, have linked him to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and his alleged involvement in arming a private militia known as Anandpur Khalsa Fauj (AKF).
Despite his detention, Amritpal is believed to have continued his clandestine operations, prompting concerted efforts by state and central authorities to dismantle his network.
On January 2, Kulwant Singh Rauke, a key associate of Amritpal, was granted a six-day parole by the Punjab Police following the demise of his uncle.
Rauke, currently imprisoned in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, is the first member of the outfit to be released for any purpose.
The radical Sikh preacher Amritpal, faced a crackdown resulting in the imprisonment of ten members, including Amritpal himself, in Dibrugarh jail since the initiation of the operation in March 2023.
The Assam jail currently detains Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Papalpreet Singh, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, all awaiting legal proceedings against them.
The legal actions against Waris Punjab De members intensified after an alleged intrusion into the Ajnala police station complex on February 23, 2023, prompting the issuance of arrest warrants under the National Security Act.
