Guwahati: In a landmark initiative, Assam Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (ABOCWWB), which is under the Assam government’s Labour Welfare Department, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) for a residential skill development program on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Innovative Analyst.

Under this initiative, over 100 candidates from the families of registered construction workers across Assam will be trained to equip them with high-demand digital skills, which will pave the way for a brighter, self-reliant future.

The MoU was signed on Friday (April 4) by Prof. Rohit Sinha, Dean (R&D) from IIT, Guwahati and Anamika Tewari, Labour Commissioner, Assam-cum-Member Secretary, ABOCWWB, in the presence of Labour Welfare, Tea Tribes & Adivasi Welfare Minister Rupesh Gowala.

Additional Chief Secretary Dr. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Labour Welfare Department;  Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati; Prof. Hemanta Kaushik, Dean, Outreach Education & Services (OES);  Prof. Gaurav Trivedi, Principal Investigator, Daksh Gurukul, IITG and Munna Bhagat, Nodal officer for IT were also present during the MoU signing and exchange program.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Devendra Jalihal stated, “This collaboration exemplifies IIT Guwahati’s commitment to national development through inclusive skilling for entrepreneurship, empowering the youth from the unorganised sector with cutting-edge knowledge in AI/ML aligns directly with our vision of contributing to a self-reliant, technology-driven India.”

Prof. Hemanta Kaushik added, “We believe access to premier education and training should not be limited by background. Through this MoU, we aim to reach communities that have been historically underrepresented in the IT ecosystem, and truly democratize opportunity.”

Highlighting the program’s impact, Prof. Gaurav Trivedi shared, “Daksh Gurukul is designed to be a catalyst for change. We’re not just offering training—we’re providing a platform where talent meets opportunity, supported by mentorship, real-world projects, and a residential learning experience that builds both skills and confidence. This MoU is more than a document; it is a commitment to shaping a skilled, self-reliant, and confident generation for Viksit Bharat.”

Rupesh Gowala requested the IIT Guwahati authority to provide world class training to all the candidates along with the placement in various companies.

Dr. B. K. Chakravarthy said, “The skilling, which is linked with real-life practical experiences, will not only meet the industry’s standard but also a self-reliance and entrepreneurships opportunities in the field of innovative technologies. The youths of Assam are very active in learning new skills for improving their regular incomes and livelihoods.”
