Guwahati: The Assam Congress will host a large-scale cultural tribute in Guwahati on November 18 to mark the 53rd birth anniversary of celebrated singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg — the first since his death in September.
The event, titled “Kanchanjungha – Sanskriti Houk Maitreyir Mantra,” is being organised by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
The programme is expected to draw artists, writers, filmmakers, students and admirers from across the state in a collective homage to the late musician, whose influence on Assamese music and public life remains unmatched.
APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said the event aims not only to celebrate Garg’s artistic legacy but also to honour his role in shaping Assam’s cultural identity.
“This will be the first birth anniversary of our beloved Zubeen since his passing. We are organising this central tribute to celebrate his art and his lifelong commitment to Assam. Zubeen stood for justice, creativity and the pride of Assam—values that the Congress continues to uphold,” Gogoi said.
Since Garg’s death in Singapore, the Assam Congress has been pushing for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
The party has organised peace marches, rallies, digital campaigns and public outreach programmes demanding “Justice for Zubeen Garg”.
The tribute event will feature performances by prominent artists including Joi Baruah, Manas Robin, Maitreyee Patar, Rupam Bhuyan, Sweety Das, Richa Bhardwaj and Trishna Devi.
Members of the cultural fraternity, along with Garg’s close friends and family, are also expected to attend.
In keeping with Garg’s known passion for environmental causes — particularly his affection for the Nahor tree — the Congress has announced a state-wide plantation drive.
The party plans to plant a Nahor sapling in every booth across Assam as a symbolic tribute.
Born on November 18, 1972, Zubeen Garg emerged as one of Assam’s most influential cultural voices. His sudden death left a deep impact across the state.
Through this tribute and continuing public mobilisation, the Assam Congress says it aims to reinforce its commitment to cultural harmony, justice and the preservation of Assam’s identity — a legacy closely associated with the late artist.
