New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday held a strategy meeting with leaders of the party’s Assam unit to review preparations for the 2026 assembly elections and assess progress on the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls.
The meeting was attended by Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC state in-charge Jitendra Singh, Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia and other senior leaders.
Party sources said organisational preparedness, voter list revision and key state-specific issues were discussed in detail as the Congress begins its groundwork for the polls expected in March–April next year.

The SR of electoral rolls is currently underway in Assam. As per the Election Commission’s instructions to the state’s chief electoral officer, January 1, 2026, has been fixed as the qualifying date for the revision.
Officials noted that the SR falls between a routine annual summary revision and a Special Intensive Revision in terms of scope.
The Election Commission had last month ordered Special Intensive Revisions in 12 states and Union Territories, including four that will head to elections in 2025.
