GUWAHATI: On Saturday, Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah made an appeal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging him to provide a government job on compassionate grounds to the widow of Mridul Islam, a Congress party leader who tragically lost his life during a protest.

Islam died while participating in the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ rally on Wednesday, a protest organized by the opposition party.

The Congress has claimed that his death was the result of “police high-handedness,” alleging that excessive force was used during the demonstration.

During the protest, police deployed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, leading to injuries among several Congress workers, including journalists.

Borah, in a letter to the Chief Minister, emphasised that Mridul Islam’s death was a consequence of the “overuse of force” by the police.

He expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “Regardless of our political differences, the death of a political worker who dedicated his life to serving democracy at the hands of the state’s law enforcement is an immense tragedy.”

Borah also pointed out that Islam leaves behind his wife, Hamida Parbin, and their two young children.

Given the circumstances, he has requested that the Assam government offer a “suitable government job” to Islam’s widow, in her home district of Kamrup (rural), in accordance with her qualifications.

Borah concluded his letter with a note of hope, saying, “I sincerely hope that you will respond positively to this request, and I would personally be grateful for your compassion towards a grieving widow and her family during this difficult time.”
