Guwahati: The Congress kicked off its election drive from the heart of Guwahati on Thursday, with the presence of senior party leaders, as preparations for the Assam Assembly elections 2026 gather pace.
The party launched its mega outreach initiative to consolidate grassroots support across the state.
The mega campaign titled “Samay Paribartan – Maati Bochaok, Jaati Bochaok” was flagged off from Manabendra Bhawan at Ganeshguri.
Led by top Congress leaders, party workers and supporters marched through prominent stretches of the city, holding placards and raising slogans, including “Dekh’ot koi Mami dangor nohoi” (Mami is not bigger than the country).
According to party sources, the rally is planned to pass through Maa Kamakhya Mandir, Amingaon and Ganeshguri before proceeding towards Hotel Lily and later Zubeen Khetra in Sonapur.
Addressing supporters during the rally in Amingaon, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of arbitrary governance and alleging large-scale land grabbing by his family.
Gaurav Gogoi said, “Assam wants real change. Years of tolerance, abuse, and injustice have pushed people to the edge. The limit is over. It’s time for change, for an inclusive and progressive Assam.”
“Through this rally, we want to show how the Chief Minister is doing as he pleases and grabbing land everywhere. He has defied the law and, as per the information we have, his entire family has grabbed around 12,000 bighas of land across the state, flouting land laws,” Gogoi alleged.
Referring to the private educational institution, Gogoi slammed the government’s priorities stating that the school caters only to elite due to its high fee structure.
“It is a shame that during the tenure of a person who has been the Education Minister, nearly 8,000 schools were closed, while his family has set up a 60-bigha elite school. We want to lay bare these facts before the people of Assam,” he said.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, also joined the attack, raising concerns over the condition of the state’s education infrastructure and targeting the government’s record in the sector.
