Guwahati: The Congress has appointed Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat Constituency Gaurav Gogoi as the deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informing him about the appointment of the deputy leader, chief whip, and two whips for the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, said Congress general secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal on Sunday.
While eight-time MP from Kerala Kodikunnil Suresh has been appointed as the party’s chief whip, the Congress has appointed Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore and Kishanganj MP Dr. Md Jawaid as whips, he said.
Earlier, the party had named Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition who was subsequently appointed to the post.
Gaurav Gogoi won Lok Sabha election from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in Assam, defeating his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Topon Gogoi by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.
“Guided by LoP Rahul Gandhi ji, the Congress and INDIA parties will energetically champion the people’s causes in the Lok Sabha,” Venugopal said.
