Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the Union Budget 2026, calling it a reform-oriented budget that balances India’s global ambitions with grassroots development.

In a post on ‘X’, CM Sarma complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting the budget.  He said that Assam and the Eastern region stand to benefit from several key provisions announced by the Finance Minister, particularly in areas of fiscal support, infrastructure, industry, and skill development.

Speaking on the key highlights of the budget, the Assam Chief Minister noted:

The formal acceptance of the 16th Finance Commission recommendations is expected to increase Assam’s share in tax devolution from 3.128% to 3.258%, providing greater fiscal space for development. Overall transfers to the state are set to rise substantially.

The budget places a strong thrust on semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, data centres, chemical parks, and rare earths, creating new employment opportunities for youth.

The announcement of Self-Help Marts (SHE-Marts) is expected to strengthen Assam’s efforts in building a robust ecosystem of Lakhpati Didis under MMUA.

Emphasis on skilling aligns with Assam’s vision to emerge as a hub for skilled professionals in healthcare, AI, and allied sectors.

Targeted measures for fisheries, commercial farming, and Amrit Sarovars will benefit the state’s agricultural community.

New tourism circuits in the North East, along with infrastructure and public transport investments in Tier-3 and Tier-4 towns, will accelerate Assam’s urbanisation and connectivity.

Focus on the Orange Economy will open new avenues for creative talent and content creators in the region.

The decision to upgrade the National Mental Health Institute at Tezpur will strengthen specialised healthcare services in Assam.

The budget provides ₹2 lakh crore under Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, along with ₹6,812 crore for North-East development, underscoring the government’s sustained focus on the region.

CM Sarma further appreciated the budget’s continued emphasis on fiscal discipline and price stability.
