Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on industrial leaders to refrain from employing illegal Bangladeshi migrants as a source of inexpensive labour.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday after engaging with prominent corporate leaders, including representatives from Tata, Adani Group, and Mahindra, Sarma emphasised the importance of addressing the root causes of illegal migration by curbing such hiring practices.
Sarma noted that middlemen often facilitate the influx of cheap labour from Bangladesh for industrial use.
He urged industries to take a firm stand and eliminate the practice, which perpetuates the issue of illegal migration.
When asked if this topic was discussed in his meetings with corporate executives, Sarma highlighted that Assam has been addressing the problem since 1979, suggesting that it remains a significant issue for the state.
The chief minister also outlined plans for the upcoming “Advantage Assam 2.0” investment summit, scheduled for February 25-26 in Guwahati.
The state is targeting investment commitments of Rs. 1 lakh crore, focusing on key sectors such as tourism, semiconductors, and defense.
Sarma provided updates on major projects, including the Tata Group’s Rs. 27,000-crore semiconductor assembly plant, which is progressing on schedule.
The first phase is set to launch by November or December this year.
Additionally, the Tata Group has expressed interest in developing a 500-MW solar power capacity in Assam.

As part of a new industrial policy, the state plans to repurpose underutilised tea estate lands for solar power projects.
Sarma explained that the policy aims to maximize the potential of Assam’s resources for sustainable growth.
Given Assam’s strategic proximity to regions with high Army deployment, Sarma revealed a push to attract investments in defense production and repair.
This initiative was a key topic during his discussions with the Adani Group and Mahindra representatives.
The chief minister’s appeal for ethical hiring practices and the state’s aggressive investment strategies reflect Assam’s broader vision for economic growth while addressing long-standing socio-political issues.
