Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday reviewed preparations for the Swahid Smarak Khetra (martyrs’ column), being constructed to honour those who lost their lives during the Assam Agitation, ahead of its inauguration on December 10.
The memorial, whose foundation stone was laid in 2019 at Boragaon, features water bodies, an auditorium, a prayer hall, a cycle track, and provisions for a sound-and-light show depicting the Assam Agitation and the state’s history.
The chief minister inspected various components of the project and reviewed the final finishing touches, issuing instructions to ensure all work is completed on time. He also suggested ways to enhance the aesthetic, structural, and commemorative elements of the site.
He said the memorial should serve as a lasting symbol of Assam’s gratitude to the martyrs and a place for future generations to reflect on their sacrifices.
