Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday paid homage to the victims of the 2008 serial bomb blasts, one of the deadliest terror attacks in the state’s history, which claimed 88 lives and left more than 500 injured.

In a post on X, Sarma described October 30, 2008, as a “dark day” for Assam, recalling the coordinated explosions carried out by the Ranjan Daimary-led faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, and Bongaigaon.

“October 30, 2008, will always remain a dark day in Assam’s history as it witnessed the most dastardly attack on its soil. As we mark this solemn occasion, I pay my tributes to all those who lost their lives and vow to never let Assam return to those dark days,” the chief minister said.

The serial blasts, triggered within minutes of each other, had sent shockwaves across the state and marked a turning point in Assam’s fight against insurgent violence.

In September 2022, the Gauhati High Court upheld the life imprisonment sentence awarded by a special court to Ranjan Daimary and six others for orchestrating the attacks, while acquitting four co-accused.

Seventeen years later, the anniversary continues to serve as a somber reminder of the tragedy and the state’s resilience in its pursuit of lasting peace.
