Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday performed the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for the Palashbari-Sualkuchi Bridge.

The event, held at Bathan Pam in Sualkuchi, marks the beginning of an ambitious project that promises to transform connectivity across the Brahmaputra River.

Speaking during the event, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Marking another milestone in our infrastructural journey, the 12.2km long Palasbari-Sualkuchi Bridge will bridge the gap between the two important places and boost connectivity in the State.”

The 4-lane extradosed PSC (Prestressed Concrete) bridge, spanning 12.21 kilometers, will connect Palashbari on National Highway 17 to Sualkuchi via the Bongshar-Sualkuchi Road.

Designed to enhance transportation and urban development, the project is anticipated to provide long-term benefits to the people of Assam.

The project is supported by the New Development Bank (NDB), which approved a $300 million loan in 2019, showcasing international investment in Assam’s infrastructure growth.

An extradosed PSC (Prestressed Concrete) bridge is a unique type of bridge that combines features of a prestressed box girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge.

The Palashbari-Sualkuchi Bridge includes two approach viaducts of 0.216 kilometers each and wetland viaducts of 0.864 kilometers. It also includes a 5.387-kilometer road on the southern bank and a 1.927-kilometer road on the northern bank.

The bridge will connect key areas, making travel easier for residents and businesses on both sides of the Brahmaputra.

The chief minister also inaugurated a newly constructed BJP office building at Sualkuchi.
