Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the Director General of Police to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore last week.
The decision follows widespread outrage and over 60 FIRs lodged across Assam against organisers of the Northeast India Festival, which Garg had travelled to attend.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is already looking into the matter.
“Regarding the untimely demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg, we will not spare anyone. I met the DGP, ADGP (CID), Chief Secretary and senior officers today. I have instructed the DGP to form an SIT with the best officers of Assam Police,” Sarma said in a post on X.
The Chief Minister added that viscera samples would be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Delhi for detailed examination.

“The SIT will have complete freedom to investigate with professional integrity,” he said.
A second postmortem of Garg’s body was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning after demands from fans and civil society groups.
The 52-year-old singer died on September 19 while swimming off the Singapore coast.
His last rites were performed in Guwahati on Tuesday with full state honours.
