Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the cultural museum project in Guwahati’s Khanapara that will house the historic ‘Vrindavani Vastra‘.
During the foundation-stone laying ceremony, the Chief Minister stated that the project will be completed on nearly two acres of land provided by the Sericulture Department in front of the APSC office within a span of 1.5 years.
He further asserted that his government was committed to safeguarding the state’s identity as he laid the foundation stone for a museum complex to display the historic ‘Vrindavani Vastra’.
The Bhumi Pujan of the project was held in the presence of Savitri Jindal, Chairperson of O.P. Jindal Group, JSW Group CMD Sajjan Jindal, senior government officials, cultural figures and members of the public.

CM Sarma expressed my gratitude to JSW foundation for playing an important role in getting the Vrindavani Vastra to Assam and in building an entire museum dedicated to house it.
“One by one, Assam is reclaiming it’s glorious heritage. Today, we took a major leap forward in our effort to bring the Vrindavani Vastra back to Assam. In the heart of Guwahati, I laid the foundation stone of the world class museum which will house this sacred textile.” Sarma said in a post on X after the ceremony,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.
The 16th-century silk textile, created under the guidance of Vaishnava saint Srimanta Sankardeva, will be loaned to the state by the British Museum for public display for 18 months, starting in 2027.
According to the Chief Minister, the British Museum has asked Assam to build a state-of-the-art facility with precise control over temperature, humidity and lighting before the artefact can be loaned. He stated that the initiative reflects Assam’s commitment to reclaiming and preserving its civilisational heritage.
