Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday laid the foundation for the modernization project of the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden.
This Rs 362 crore project aims to modernize the zoo, upgrading facilities for both animals and visitors.
Speaking at the ceremony, the chief minister highlighted that since its establishment in 1957, the zoo has been the northeast’s only zoological and botanical institution, functioning as a vital conservation hub for the region’s diverse wildlife.
He said the zoo, which spans across a vast area, houses a diverse range of flora and fauna.
The CM shared his personal connection to the zoo and explained his commitment to its modernization upon assuming office. He announced the govt’s allocation of Rs 362.04 crore for renovations.
In addition, the Chief Minister revealed plans to establish two new open-model zoos – one in Dibrugarh with a budget of Rs 259 crore and another in Silchar with an allocation of Rs 214 crore.
The state government has also planned an Institute of Wildlife and Health for wild animals at Chabua, Sarma said.
Addressing the issue of poaching, Chief Minister Sarma stated that while poaching incidents have significantly decreased in the state, the government has entrusted a Special Task Force of the Assam Police with the responsibility of combating poaching cases involving elephants and tigers.
He also highlighted the state government’s success in reclaiming 74,115 bighas of forest land from encroachment, which has contributed to an increase in animal populations.

At the event, the chief minister also released a report on “Elephant Population Estimation in Assam”.
The survey revealed an elephant population of 5,828, indicating successful wildlife conservation efforts in the state.
