GUWAHATI: As the controversy over Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent remarks on birth control continues to escalate, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a scathing attack on his Bihar counterpart, claiming that Kumar has “lost mental balance” and is a “threat to the state”.
Chief Minister Sarma, while addressing the issue during an event in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa on Thursday, didn’t mince words in expressing his discontent against Kumar’s recent statements.
“I think he (CM Nitish Kumar) has lost his mental balance. His party should remove him from the Chief Minister’s post. A chief minister with a lost mental balance is a threat to the state,” the Chief Minister Sarma was quoted as saying by a national news agency.
He also called for the immediate removal of Kumar from his position.
The controversy began when Kumar made a statement in the Bihar Assembly regarding population control and women’s education, sparking uproar and demands for his resignation.
Kumar’s comments led to chaotic scenes in the Bihar Assembly during the ongoing Winter Session, with opposition members strongly protesting against his remarks.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also joined the chorus of criticism, insisting that Kumar should resign.
In an attempt to contain the growing uproar, Kumar publicly tendered an apology for his statements on Wednesday. “I apologise, and I take back my words,” he declared.
Meanwhile, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav came to Nitish Kumar’s defence, stating that the Chief Minister’s remarks were about sex education and were being misinterpreted.
