Guwahati: Karbi Anglong, once a hub of insurgent activities, has undergone a remarkable transformation following the 2021 peace accord with six militant outfits, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

Speaking during his two-day visit to the hill district, Sarma highlighted the district’s shift from violence to progress, with special emphasis on reintegrating former militants into productive roles within society.

The chief minister met with representatives of the six groups that signed the peace accord and reviewed the terms of the settlement, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to implementing the agreement in “letter and spirit.”

“From guns to groundnuts and extremism to entrepreneurship, Karbi Anglong has experienced a significant turnaround,” Sarma shared on X.

He noted that through reintegration initiatives, many former cadres have transitioned to roles as agricultural and fishery entrepreneurs, contributing to the region’s economic growth.

Sarma credited the transformation to the Centre’s Rs 1,000 crore development package, which supports various programmes aimed at fostering stability and growth in the region.

The peace accord was signed by representatives of six groups, including the Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), three factions of the Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT), and the United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA).

The agreement, signed shortly after Sarma took office in May 2021, marked a new chapter for Karbi Anglong, steering it toward a future defined by peace and prosperity.
