Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the newly constructed Kamrup District Judicial Court Complex in Guwahati’s Amingaon on Friday.
The modern facility features 15 courtrooms, digital and ICT-enabled services and several amenities offering a robust, integrated judicial infrastructure.
The project has been built at a cost of Rs 52.25 crore. The facility includes digital services such as e-filing, video conferencing, and case tracking, designed to accelerate trials, reduce paperwork, and enhance transparency.
Besides, the complex includes judges’ chambers, waiting areas for litigants, and lawyers’ lounges.
Speaking during the inauguration, CM Sarma said, “We have made commendable progress in improving all crime-related indicators. Our goal is to ensure Assam reaches a 60% conviction rate in the next 5 years.”
Prolonged case pendency is detrimental to both complainants and the accused, the Chief Minister noted. To address this, he called upon legal professionals and institutions to adopt technology, particularly artificial intelligence, to improve judicial efficiency and expedite case resolution.
He announced that the state government is actively recruiting more public prosecutors to strengthen the conviction process.
The chief minister also appealed to the Gauhati High Court and the National Judicial Academy to train new legal recruits to support faster disposal of pending cases.
He also stated that the construction of the new Gauhati High Court building in North Guwahati is expected to begin within a year.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar of the Gauhati High Court, Law Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass, and several sitting judges and senior officials from both the judiciary and the state administration.
