Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday inaugurated the Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Campus of Rabindranath Tagore University in Hojai. Calling the new campus a “milestone,” Sarma said it marks a significant step forward for higher education in the state.
Built on 82 bighas at a cost of Rs 55.5 crore, the campus features an academic block, an administrative building, and the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Several departments, including Pharmacy and other science programs, have already relocated to the new location.
During the inauguration, Sarma said he was pleased to see the university, which began at Hojai College in 2019, grow into a full-fledged institution with 3,500 students and 35 academic programs.
He also announced an additional Rs 50 crore for further campus development and directed the district administration to build a 1.5-km road connecting the university to the National Highway.
The Chief Minister also announced that the local Industrial Training Institute (ITI) has been handed over to the university, making it the third campus.
He urged students to embrace modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Semiconductors, stating that those who don’t will be “illiterate in the true sense” in the future.
Sarma also highlighted the growing demand for courses in commerce and finance, saying that Assam’s universities must cultivate entrepreneurship and innovation. He added that by combining modern education, entrepreneurship, and cultural values, Assam can become a leading state in India.
Referencing the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, Sarma noted that the state has secured Rs 1.40 lakh crore in investments, including a new semiconductor plant. He said the state’s youth must prepare for these new jobs and mentioned that Japan is interested in hiring 50,000 skilled workers from Assam.
The event was attended by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, along with other ministers, MPs, and university officials.
