Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a jibe at the Congress after the party released its first list of candidates for the state Assembly elections, calling it a reflection of “dynastic politics”.
CM Sarma said that the Congress’s selection of candidates reflects a pattern of promoting political heirs rather than encouraging new entrants in politics. He added that the list primarily has sons and relatives of prominent political leaders, be it the son of late chief minister Tarun Gogoi, the son of former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, or even the son of late chief minister Bhumidhar Barman.
“If you look at the Congress’ list of candidates, it is a reflection of dynastic politics. The list includes Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Chief Minister the late Tarun Gogoi; Debabrata Saikia, son of former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia; Prateek Bardoloi, son of Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bardoloi; Tanzil Hussain, son of Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain; and many more,” the Chief Minister said.
On the contrary, Sarma said the BJP has given tickets to people who are from humble backgrounds or belong to middle class or lower middle-class families.
“We have nominated people like Terash Gowalla and Jogen Mohan whose parents were never in the political limelight. So, unlike the Congress, which still believes in promoting family-based politics, BJP’s objective is to ensure that a majority of individuals from humble backgrounds and even economically disadvantaged sections are given an opportunity to take their political journeys ahead,” he added.
