GUWAHATI: In a major fillip to infrastructure development in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a proposal for a 7-km-long elevated road project in Silchar town valued at Rs 1,200 crore.
CM Sarma on Saturday concluded his three-day visit to the three districts of Barak Valley.
The chief minister, who chaired a comprehensive review meeting with key stakeholders, focused on improving road and healthcare infrastructure during his visit to Barak Valley.
The project will be executed in two phases: Phase I will span from Capital Point to Chittaranjan Statue, covering 3.5 km, and Phase II will extend from Capital Point to Ramnagar, also covering 3.5 km.
“I have proposed a 7 km long elevated road project for Silchar town, worth Rs 1200 crore. Though this won’t be an easy one, with the support and agreement of the people of Silchar, we can complete it within two-and-a-half years,” CM Sarma said.

The project is part of initiatives aimed at improving the infrastructure and health facilities in Silchar and surrounding districts.
“13 key roads will be repaired before Durga Puja, and Rs 14 crore will be sanctioned. Additionally, the Rangirkhari to Silchar Medical College and Hospital road will be widened, and new drains will be constructed at a cost of Rs 30 crore,” he said.
Sarma said that the Hailakandi district commissioner has been instructed to find a suitable location for the medical college’s construction.

He said, “A 500+ bed hospital is expected to be ready by November 2025 at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. After completion, another 1,000-bed hospital will be constructed at the hospital.”
He also announced that water supply schemes worth over Rs 100 crore have been approved for Hailakandi and Karimganj districts.
During his visit, the chief minister also reviewed efforts to ramp up sporting infrastructure in the region.
