The Assam Cabinet has approved the constitution of a dedicated sessions court for the day-to-day trial of the death case of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
The move is aimed at expediting the judicial process to ensure focused and time-bound disposal of the case.
This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Thursday.
Addressing the media following the cabinet meeting, CM Sarma said the State government will formally request the Gauhati High Court to constitute an exclusive sessions court under Section 346(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for conducting daily hearings in the case.
He added that the government is committed to ensuring a transparent and timely judicial process in view of the sensitivity of the matter.
He said, “The Cabinet has approved the formation of a dedicated court for the day-to-day trial of the case. We will place a request before the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Thereafter, the Chief Justice will take a decision on the constitution of the court and the proceedings.”

Among other key decisions, the Cabinet cleared the ‘ASHA Express’ scheme to provide two-wheelers to all active ASHA workers and supervisors across the state. Administrative approval was also grnated for setting up the College of Agriculture at Patharkandi in Sribhumi district.
Further, the government approved disbursement of Rs 79,000 per beneficiary to around 39.70 lakh beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme. To boost the aviation sector, the Cabinet approved a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel from 23.65 paise to 18.65 paise in the rupee.
