Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch a campaign urging the fast-tracking of the investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg and promoting initiatives to preserve his legacy for posterity.

The Chief Minister said the ruling party will roll out a “positive” campaign titled ‘Moiu Zubeen, Amiu Zubeen’ (I am also Zubeen, We are also Zubeen) from October 23, aiming to honour the singer’s contributions and mobilise public support for timely justice.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case was confident of filing the charge sheet by the first week of December, although the police statutorily get 90 days to do so.

“Courts usually take time to deliver judgments, but people want justice fast. The Cabinet has thus decided that the Chief Justice would be contacted so that we get a fast-track court as soon as the charge sheet is filed,” he said.

A 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police’s CID is investigating the death, with a team to leave for the Southeast Asian nation next week.

The Assam government has set up a One-Man Inquiry Commission, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, to probe the circumstances leading to the untimely death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

“The BJP will campaign for a fast-track court to take up the case, appointment of a special public prosecutor and a watertight charge-sheet,” he added.
The campaign, set to launch on October 23, will follow a 10-point agenda that includes erecting statues of Zubeen Garg and establishing two music schools in each Assembly constituency held by the BJP — one dedicated to Garg and the other to legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika.

As part of the initiative, all BJP members will also plant a ‘Nahor’ tree sapling, the singer’s favourite, Sarma said.

So far, seven arrests have been made in connection with the case, including NorthEast festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin and Assam Police officer Sandipan, two of his band members, and his two personal security officers (PSOs).
