GUWAHATI: In a move signalling party discipline and adherence to internal candidacy norms, the state BJP expelled 15 party members for deciding to run as independent candidates in the upcoming Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) elections, going against the BJP’s official nominee.
The state BJP president, Bhabesh Kalita, took strong action to maintain party discipline.
The expelled members, including Lalremthiem Tuolor, Rahul Naiding, Silvias Lalrotlounga Khozol, Paunamsaulakbe Newme, Pauramduing Jeme, Pronen Haflongbar, Punush Nunisa, Bimal Hojai, Hemanta Kemprai, Joysing Durong, Dormen Enghi, Ramgalungbe Jeme, Lalropui Hmar, Saivongril Hrangkhol, and Joydesh Phong, had opted for an independent stance in the DHAC polls, deviating from the party’s official candidate.
The DHAC elections, set for January 8, 2024, in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, are crucial for political dynamics in the region.
The expelled members’ decision to contest independently reflects internal party dynamics and the diversity of opinions within the BJP.
The election process is slated to commence at 8 am and conclude at 4 pm with 280 polling stations facilitating the voting process.
A total of 1,41,124 eligible voters, comprising 70,485 males and 70,639 females, are expected to exercise their voting rights.
The announcement of the DHAC poll results is scheduled for January 12, 2024, adding to the anticipation surrounding the electoral outcome.
The Dima Hasao district is under the administration of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), established under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The Council, also known as the Dima Hasao Council, is instrumental in overseeing the development of the hill people in the area.
Currently, Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa leads the Council.
As the political landscape intensifies ahead of the DHAC elections, the BJP’s internal dynamics and the expelled members’ independent candidature add an intriguing dimension to the electoral scenario in Assam.
