Guwahati: Eyeing the 2026 assembly elections, the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened a two-day strategic meeting on the outskirts of Guwahati to chalk out its roadmap for the upcoming battle at the ballot box.

Held at a resort in Sonapur, the high-level gathering brought together 51 senior leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh.

State BJP president Dilip Saikia shared details of the meet on social media, noting its focus on evaluating the current political landscape and preparing a robust organisational strategy.

Speaking to the press, Sarma said discussions revolved around key election preparations — from drafting the party manifesto and selecting candidates to crafting an effective campaign blueprint.

“We’re taking stock of everything from scheme implementation to grassroots engagement,” he said.

On the question of MLA re-nominations, Sarma confirmed that changes are likely.

“It’s not feasible for all sitting MLAs to be re-nominated. Some may opt out, others could be dropped. Delimitation has also reshaped some constituencies, and certain seats are now reserved for SC/ST candidates,” he explained.

He also hinted at the inclusion of fresh faces in the next list of candidates but declined to speculate on numbers.

Performance of current legislators — particularly their effectiveness in implementing government schemes — will be a key factor in ticket distribution, Sarma added.

With several newly announced welfare schemes set to roll out from August 15, the chief minister expressed confidence that the BJP’s electoral prospects would receive a significant boost.
