Guwahati: The final journey of popular singer Zubeen Garg began on Tuesday (September 23) from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, where his body had been kept since Sunday for fans and well-wishers to pay homage, to the cremation site at Kamarkuchi in Sonapur.
The second post-mortem examination of the singer was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on the morning of September 23.
A specialised medical team comprising four expert doctors from GMCH, Pragjyotishpur Medical College, and AIIMS conducted the examination under strict supervision. The entire postmortem was recorded on video to allow thorough analysis.
His mortal remains were brought back to the complex and later taken to the cremation site in a flower-adorned ambulance, draped with the traditional Assamese gamosas.
A huge black-and-white portrait of the beloved singer was placed in front of the vehicle, as thousands of grieving fans walked alongside the cortege. Zubeen’s 85-year-old father and wife Garima Saikia followed in separate vehicles.
The singer will be cremated with full state honours at Kamarkuchi, about 20 km from the sports complex.
“The final goodbye to the legend, #BelovedZubeen. You will always be alive in our hearts and thoughts,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X.
Several eminent personalities, including Assam chief minister Himanta Sarma and union minister Kiren Rijiju, paid last respects to Zubeen Garg before his cremation. Other dignitaries who have paid their last respects are Assam assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, union minister and former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, and union minister of state for external affairs Pabitra Margherita.
All educational institutions in Assam remained closed on Tuesday for his last rites.
