Guwahati: The Assam government’s ambitious plan to connect Kokrajhar with Bhutan’s Gelephu is set to bring transformative development to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), said Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Pramod Boro on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025 in Guwahati, Boro emphasised the importance of connectivity in fostering progress and lasting peace in the region, inspired by Bhutan’s model of enduring tranquility.
“The proposed connectivity between Kokrajhar and Gelephu has the potential to reshape the Bodoland Territorial Region. This summit is a platform to explore new avenues for growth and prosperity,” he stated.
The central government is already conducting a survey for a planned rail link between Kokrajhar in Assam and Gelephu in Bhutan.
In addition, plans are underway to construct an all-weather road connecting the two towns, which is expected to significantly boost economic activity and trade in the region.
Boro expressed optimism about the two-day business summit, highlighting its potential to redefine Assam’s economic landscape and drive development across the Northeast.
“Tourism is a sector brimming with potential, and I am confident that this summit will lead to major announcements to unlock new opportunities,” he added.
The Kokrajhar-Gelephu link is seen as a strategic move to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen ties between Assam and Bhutan while contributing to the broader goal of economic growth in the northeastern states.
