Barpeta: The Assam government, through the Industries & Commerce Department and the Barpeta District Administration, has launched ‘Barpeta Hub’ at the Industrial Estate, Sonkuchi, in Barpeta Town.
This first-of-its-kind one-stop shopping complex is dedicated to promoting local MSME units and showcasing indigenous products.
Barpeta Hub features 16 stalls offering a wide range of traditional items, including bell metal and brassware, Barpeta atasbazi (fireworks), Assamese jewellery, cane and bamboo furniture, handloom and embroidery items, wooden Furniture, agarbatti, toiletries, among others.
The initiative provides a permanent retail platform for artisans and small regional entrepreneurs.
In coordination with the Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Barpeta, six Co-operative Societies have been allotted stalls at the Hub to strengthen community-based enterprise models and increase MSME outreach.
Key focus will be placed on products with Geographical Indication (GI) tags such as Sarthebari Bell Metalware, Assamese Gamosa, and Assamese Jewellery, reinforcing the identity of Assam’s rich craft heritage.
Strategically located near the Barpeta-Howly highway, Barpeta Hub is expected to attract both locals and tourists. Future developments will add more amenities to enhance the visitor experience.
The District Administration has urged all departments, tour operators, and hospitality stakeholders to promote ‘Barpeta Hub’ as a tourist destination.
Rohan Kumar Jha, the district commissioner, has advised that visitors to Barpeta Satra should also be brought here to experience the pride of local craftsmanship, supporting the spirit of “Vocal for Local” under NITI Aayog’s Aspirational District Programme.
DC Jha officially inaugurated the hub earlier this week.
