GUWAHATI: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against wildlife crime, Assam authorities have arrested three poachers in separate operations within the past three days.
The latest arrest occurred in Tamulpur on Thursday, where a notorious rhino poacher was nabbed during an operation led by the Field Director’s Office of the Manas Tiger Project in Barpeta Road.
Acting on credible intelligence, a team, spearheaded by the state’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Sandeep Kumar, swiftly apprehended the alleged poacher, Matia Soren.
A search operation conducted at Soren’s residence resulted in the recovery of a rhino horn.
Soren is currently undergoing interrogation at the Field Director’s Office of the Manas Tiger Project, as forest department officials continue their investigation to unveil the complete details surrounding the poaching incident.
This development comes in the wake of an earlier arrest on April 2, where two poachers were apprehended in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park.
The duo, identified as Uhinath Urang and Samung Timung, was nabbed during search operations launched by forest officials of the Sakmuthi forest camp.
Authorities recovered a hand-made gun, gunpowder, and two mobile phones from their possession.
Following their arrest, Urang and Timung were produced before the Kaliabor Subdivisional Judicial Court and subsequently shifted to jail custody.
As investigations progress, forest department officials remain vigilant, aiming to deter future incidents of poaching and preserve the region’s diverse wildlife population.
