Guwahati: The Communist Party of India (Marxist), a constituent of the Congress-led opposition alliance in Assam, on Monday announced its candidates for two constituencies in the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for April 9.
State party secretary Suprakash Talukdar said the party will field candidates from Bhawanipur-Sorbhog and Goreswar, expressing confidence that the party will perform well in both seats.
He said, “Our nominees will be the united opposition’s candidates in both constituencies.”
The CPI(M) has renominated sitting legislator Manoranjan Talukdar from Bhawanipur-Sorbhog.
Talukdar represented Bhawanipur in the outgoing Assembly before the constituency was renamed and reconfigured during the 2023 delimitation exercise.
For the Goreswar seat, which falls within the Bodoland Territorial Region, the party has fielded Bapu Ram Boro as its candidate.
Talukdar said the CPI(M), along with other secular parties, has joined the opposition alliance with the aim of challenging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, expressing confidence that the alliance candidates would secure victory.
The opposition bloc in Assam includes the Indian National Congress, CPI(M), Assam Jatiya Parishad, All Party Hill Leaders Conference, and CPI(ML) Liberation.
In the current 126-member Assembly, the BJP holds 64 seats. Its allies, Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal, and Bodoland People’s Front, have nine, seven and three MLAs respectively.
On the opposition benches, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All India United Democratic Front has 15 members, while the CPI(M) has one legislator. There is also one Independent member in the Assembly.
