Guwahati: APRINS, a leading NGO dedicated to agricultural and social development, has joined hands with Cotton University’s Department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies to launch “Agnishika: Flames of Fire,” a powerful initiative for women’s empowerment.

The event, scheduled for March 8, 2025, at Sudmersen Hall, Cotton University, marks the beginning of a sustained movement aimed at driving tangible change in women’s lives through education, skill-building, and advocacy.

“Agnishika” will spearhead a large-scale petition campaign targeting crucial public safety improvements for women.

With a goal of 30,000 signatures, the petition calls for enhanced street lighting, expanded CCTV surveillance, and clean, accessible public toilets in essential public spaces like markets, schools, and bus stops.

The campaign will leverage both online and offline platforms, culminating in the submission of petition points to the Women and Child Development Minister of Assam.

Further, in partnership with the District Legal Service Authority – Kamrup (Metro), APRINS and Cotton University will distribute legal awareness leaflets, empowering women with knowledge of their rights.

Sayanika Dutta, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies at Cotton University, emphasized the crucial role of media in driving social change.

“This collaboration provides our students with a vital platform to amplify voices advocating for women’s empowerment and to foster meaningful discourse through responsible and impactful communication,” she stated.

Urmi Mala Mahanta, Director of APRINS, underscored the initiative’s long-term commitment. “Our dedication to improving women’s lives extends far beyond this event. We will continue to engage women in skill development programs, ensuring a lasting and positive impact on their daily lives,” she said.

The “Agnishika” event will feature insightful discussions, expert perspectives, and active student participation, fostering a dynamic platform for sustained action beyond International Women’s Day.
